10 Conversation Starters for Powerful Women Who Hate Small Talk
Because surface-level chats just don’t cut it anymore.
I used to love small talk.
Truly. It felt light and fun! pop in, pop out, and for a while, it gave me that little dopamine hit I didn’t even know I was chasing.
But eventually, I’d leave events or parties and feel like... nothing really happened.
I didn’t connect.
I didn’t feel seen.
And honestly, I didn’t learn anything about anyone.
That craving for deeper connection is what inspired me to start the Modern Round Table.
I wanted to build a space where women didn’t have to tiptoe around real topics or play the highlight reel game. Just meaningful, honest, inspiring conversations, where you feel supported, understood, and energized by the women around you.
Deeper Connection Starts With Better Questions
I’ve learned that connection doesn’t have to be hard.
But it does need to be intentional.
That’s why I keep a running list of go-to conversation starters on my phone (and yes, sometimes even scribbled on a little card in my purse). These have saved me more than once:
At networking mixers
During conference breaks
At dinner parties
Even in those awkward “I-don’t-know-anyone-here” corners at holiday gatherings
Each one is designed to help you skip the small talk and go just a littttttle bit deeper.
They’re not intense or intrusive, just warm, open-ended questions that invite someone to share who they really are.
My goal?
I always want people to leave a conversation with me feeling refreshed.
A little lighter. Like they had an aha moment.
Maybe even a bit inspired and ready for what’s next.

One More Thing
I tend to avoid asking people what they do for work right away.
Not everyone is defined by their career, and for some, it’s a topic that feels overwhelming or draining.
I’d rather learn what lights someone up before learning what pays their bills.
Ready for Real Connection?
At the end of the day, it’s not just about asking better questions.
It’s about being someone who listens.
Someone who’s present.
Someone who holds space without rushing to respond.

And the kind of community I want to invite you into.
The women who show up here aren’t trying to impress anyone.
They’re doing the work. Choosing growth.
And showing up for one another in the most beautiful, real ways.
